David Berliner

David is currently the President and Chief Operating Officer of the Brooklyn Museum.  Prior to taking on this role, he was a Trustee of the Museum beginning in 2011, and he currently serves on the Board in an ex officio capacity.

As President and COO Mr. Berliner leads strategic planning, along with all operational and administrative functions, including finance, legal, facilities and operations, technology and human resources. In addition, he directs the Museum’s marketing and communications, visitor experience, community and government relations, merchandizing, publications and editorial, and digital imaging and licensing.

Before joining the Brooklyn Museum, Mr. Berliner was the Chief Operating Officer of Forest City Ratner Companies, a Brooklyn based real estate developer and property owner.  In that capacity, we was responsible for overseeing the Company’s operations and administration, including overseeing all transactions for development and property management of the Company’s portfolio of 11+ million square feet of office, retail and residential properties throughout all five boroughs of New York City as well as in other parts of the Metropolitan area.  He was responsible for setting and implementing Company policies, and for administrative areas including human resources, information technology, and external relations.  An experienced negotiator and problem-solver, Mr. Berliner was involved in all aspects of running and growing the real estate firm since joining Forest City in 1989. He led the negotiations for the acquisition of the Nets basketball team and managed the relationships with the key stakeholders in the Company’s major development projects.

Mr. Berliner is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Madison Square Park Conservancy, a not-for-profit organization charged with the maintenance and programming of historic Madison Square Park (located at 23rd Street and 5th Avenue in Manhattan).  He is a founding member of MSPC’s Curatorial Committee, an advisory group that sources and evaluates proposals to commission work of contemporary artists to be shown in Madison Square Park.

He also serves on the Board of NYC&Co., the official destination marketing organization for New York City.

Mr. Berliner is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (B.A., 1984, summa cum laude) and the Columbia University School of Law (J.D., 1987).
